The Starfield 30 Frames Smokescreen

I was interested to see what Starfield had to offer. I watched their livestream and I got some thoughts. You have people claiming they’re sold and it looks amazing. It’s being said this game is doing something impressive, no other has tried to do.

I thought that the whole ship building mechanic was cool. Which was probably the best part of their presentation. You can upgrade different parts of the ship and add modules to it. It’s the same plug and play on the settlement building in Fallout 4.

Outside of ship building I was very underwhelmed. It didn’t seem to have all the heart of a Bethesda game. The game looks like a modded No Mans Sky. Many ideas seem to have been taken from other games.

Starfield even seems to have the same issues NMS had. It looks like a bunch of barren boring worlds. According to the leak that was correct, the flying is also bad. Putting loading screens so you don’t need to fly may be a good idea.

Apparently the story is you need to recover ancient artifacts from planets. Which I hope you won’t have to mine the planet for.

Then they talked about choice in the game. My issue is why can’t we choose to have a voiced protagonist or not. Bethesda fans hated it, when it was pretty good. I think it’s dumb to take that away. Atleast give the option.

The graphics aren’t that good and appear to have been downgraded. It doesn’t help that you’re looking at barren randomly generated planets the whole time. The lighting model they were bragging about just looks not good. When they showed the main hub city and other places, the light doesn’t pop or reflect correctly. The character models look terrible. There’s this cartoony or plasticy look they have.

The game needed a new engine. Bethesda claim it was new but it’s a modified Creation Engine which was a modified Gamebryo which has been being modified since the original engine dating back to the 90s. They just keep giving it a new name.  But thats still not an excuse, Fallout 4 looked better. I remember being blown away by the Fallout 4 reveal. They wouldn’t even have to get Unreal. They could look at modifying Id Tech and port the game.

The skill trees look super generic in this too. When Fallout 4 came out, these same Bethesda lovers criticized the SPECIAL system as bad. These same inconsistent people haven’t brought up Starfield which looks worse and tacked on at that.

Starfield seemed to be an easy project. Take Fallout 4, give it better dialogue and put it in space. They literally took the uninspired route and took trends and ideas from other games. This makes it look less inspiring.

What shocked me the most was the lack of story info. Usually, story is the main focus of Bethesda games. But it doesn’t look that way.

Rather any of this been argument of if 30fps is acceptable. Xbox said the Series X would usher in a new generation of higher frame rates. According to Xbox it isn’t but 30fps is the least of this game’s issues. The defenders of the game have talking about 30fps as if this is its only issue.
