MGS3 Delta: Substance In A Time of Subsistence

Metal Gear Solid 4 is the best MGS. I finally got to play MGS3 Delta and we need to talk about a few things. MGS3 Delta is a remake of MGS3, and very close remake to the original.

The intro song was rerecorded, it still sounds good but not as good as the original. The intro video that goes with it was changed too, its still good just not as good as the original.

The changes that are good are the quality of life improvements. You can switch camos and use the radio without going into the start menu.  The game has a modern control scheme, I dont know why they didn’t give it MGSVs controls. You dont need a dedicated stance and jump button when X or A can do those.

What didn’t I like? The legacy filter should be what the game looks like by default. They should also turn up the effects a bit, more like the original. I wish this was made in the Fox engine. The loading screens between areas should have been able to be turned off, but I was fine with them. Another thing was when you get close to people you need to hold down L1 so they don’t hear you. The AI is good but is more forgiving than the other games. People always complained that MGS4 cutscenes were too long and hurt the game. I would say MGS3 is worse, there are many cutscenes that should be gameplay. The fights with Ocelot and the Boss shouldn’t have had gameplay.

The story for the game is good, but a little confusing. Some characters are working for multiple people and you’re not sure whose side people are on. People say its a spy thriller, its more like a stealth game with spies in it. I wouldn’t call Snake a spy, he’s a guy behind enemy lines looking for a scientist and his info.  Some of the twists in this were random or confusing.

One thing that is overrated in this were the boss fights. They were cool but didn’t blow me away. The hardest one was the first one. The Ocelot one was random. The Fear one was quick but cool. The one with the End is interesting but didn’t blow me away. The best one for me was the Fury. Volgin is the longest and it’s fine but doesn’t blow me away. The Boss fight was hard but decent and theres a lot of story with it.

One thing no one talks about in MGS3 is the survival aspects. No game has done them better. Every game they get annoying with having to eat and gather resources. MGS3 balances it perfectly, where you have to eat, but it doesn’t get in the way of the game. Not eating does affect you, but it doesn’t feel like you need to eat every five minutes like other games. You have to clean wounds, fix broken or fractured bones, and other stuff. I wish the wounds affected you more outside of health.

One other aspect no one talks about is the danger. While you’re trying to be stealthy you have to be looking around more than any other MGS. Theres animals, traps, and hidden enemies that can get you.

I’ve seen some people say the Boss shows Kojima’s wokeness. I can understand that, but it doesn’t get in the way of the story. There is globalism in the game, but it doesn’t detract from the game. Its there, doesn’t make sense, buuuuutttttt nothing like today.

Metal Gear fans should play this. There are performance issues on console and PC. I didnt really have any outside of a few frame drops. Many say it’s the best MGS and I don’t agree. But this is still a great game 9/10. I always wanted to get into the original, but the control scheme ruined it. If you dont want to buy the remake, try emulating the 3DS version that plays like Peace Walker.
