Shaming in the Name of Silent Hill

We just wanted to address the latest controversy with Silent Hill 2. For a while now there have been questions about Maria and Angela’s character models. This has gotten to the point where people are constantly arguing about it.

We feel in remakes, if you are bold enough to change something from the original, the fans should be bold enough to ask about it. Now we have journalist and activist shaming Silent Hill fans. Anytime Angela’s changes are brought up, it’s made to be because these people want an attractive person on screen. Before the remake, Angela never was on a most attractive video game characters lists.

When it comes to the character models, you can see their evolution since the first game. In SH2 remake, James looks a little too much like Leon Kennedy to me, but it’s fine and the fat kid got a little fatter. The evolution of Angela’s character doesn’t make sense and the proportions of the face are off. You have people saying that Angela looks like a real woman. This argument doesn’t make sense. Angela’s character in the remake is based off of the character in the original, who isn’t based off anyone.

When you look at the original game, Angela has a narrower face. In the new game it looks like Angela’s head has come from a heavier person. People are saying it’s better for her character’s backstory, that she looks like she does in the remake. Others say she now looks like a 19 year old now, which she doesn’t. Some websites went as far as to take comparison shots between the games to show Angela looks the same. The screenshots always seem to be taken a very weird angles.

So this is a picture of Angela from the first game.

Which of these two looks more of a modern day version of her with modern technology?

For Maria, I’m not against what they did clothing wise and facial wise. I saw a few saying she has a more masculine chin, which I can see. Facial features wise she looks better, but they made her skinnier, and she’s showing less skin now. I didn’t realize they changed her body from the first one, because to me she always looked skinny from what she had on. You had to look more closely and play the game to see that. If its not that noticeable why change it? The issue is that this goes against the games point. She’s James manifestation of his physical desire and lust for his wife.

Is there an agenda to make women look bad? It’s either that or some people lack the ability to imagine characters in modern times with modern tech. Maria’s toned down proportions seem to say it’s an agenda or the devs didn’t understand the symbolism. For Angela, being attractive means nothing, it’s about the character looking so different from the original.
