Today we live in a society where everyone is getting outraged. Social media leads to companies backtracking on business decisions that are seen sheisty. So it is crazy to me the PSVR2 adapter goes under the radar.

I’ve been seeing many people say that you can buy it now and posting the pictures of their purchase. They don’t seem to understand that this is a hustle. Not even the overly outraged Xbox community is saying anything. You wonder if it’s because most of them are PC guys or are going to PC.

These guys look to have bought a converter box that has driver software on it. The more crazy part is they spend $60 on it. $60 for a USB box that you plug another USB into that goes into your computer and a DisplayPort.

Looking at the other VR headsets on PC this is pretty ridiculous. For the Samsung Odyssey+, you need to plug it in the HDMI and USB 3 ports with controllers syncing to the headset via Bluetooth. I had to buy a Display Port to HDMI converter for $16. Another thing is the USB A port on PC only gives a max of 5-7.5W of power compared to the PSVR2s potential 100W USB C cable according to the standard. That could explain the need for AC power. But again, this doesn’t justify the price.

I can understand that USB C isn’t that big of a thing. Most newer PCs have maybe one or two ports and some don’t have any. This is still not a justification for the price. You can get USB C to A converter for $10

Before this box, devs had already had it working on PC without it. I believe the first drivers were released, but only work on the new AMD GPUs, with support for more cards coming. This tells me the box and the AC power aren’t needed either.  A big plus is those drivers allow it to work outside of Steam. 

Another thing that needs to be talked about is the missing features. PSVR2 on PC lacks HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback. You’d think they’d have had their partners on PC patch the games in the adverts to support these features. I actually thought the box had Bluetooth to sync the controllers. Nope, a lot of motherboards come with it now but some will have to spend another $10-$20 to get a dongle. That makes the price even worse for it.

Am I against Sony making a converter box for PC? No but it should only be about half the price. That price and folks buying it, signals Sony is really feeling themselves and their customers will buy overpriced item, as long as a Sony logo is on it. The fact it’s locked down on PC lacking many features is another big issue.
