Why Would I Buy A PS5 Pro?

The alleged specs for the new PS5 Pro have leaked. It’s supposed to have the power between the 4070 and 4080 with AI upscaling tech. I have a lot of mixed feelings about this and mid gen upgrades.

Firstly, the whole AI upscaling feature bugs me. It was touted as being on the base PS5. The Insomniac team used it for cloth deformation in Spider-Man, and said they couldn’t say too much about it at the time. If AI upscaling comes to or is enabled on the base PS5, I will be pleased.

From early reports, people were touting that it will do 4K60. So the same marketing we’ve heard for several years? 60 FPS should’ve been the base standard for years, none of this 30fps quality mode stuff. Given the graphical settings for GTA6 for example will likely be higher. A new report is saying Sony’s AI upscaling maybe targeting 4K120.

How much is this going to cost? I’m not sold on it already. For me to buy this, they’re going to need to blow me away with stuff outside of a resolution boost. It will need to have some other unique features or I’ll wait for the next gen.

Next thing is do we really need it? Games have gotten higher resolutions, only to have frame rates stagnate and gameplay dumbed down. This isn’t all, but a lot of them. A lot of remasters just feel like 4K cash ins. There’s no reason you should be remastering relatively new games.

There was an interview with Kazunori Yamauchi about Gran Turismo 7s development. In the interview he talks about how hard it was to have 4K on PS5. The biggest hurdle to get there was the power supply, and no one has ever mentioned this. So what really does the PS5 need to be more powerful? There was also another article where several devs question the need of the PS5 Pro, because them and others aren’t getting the most out of it.

I always think with consoles being more like PC, it was a mistake. Had PS4 kept the cell processor with a more user friendly dev kit where would we be?
