Marvel Games No One Played: The Punisher

I have never been a fan of the Punisher. I thought the movies were meh and we’re trying to hard to be brutal and violent. Frank Castle is just a barebones vigilante trying to get back at the mob for his families death. He has no disguise and people know his name. In many ways it comes off as an attempt to make a superhero off of a low budget.

The Punisher game is nothing more than a Max Payne clone. Then it adds on to it and things get interesting. Instead of doing slow-mo with guns your throwing knives. The story is still about Frank Castle getting revenge on the mob though.

One of this games craziest features is the torture system. You can grab enemies and select multiple ways of getting info from them. You a can punch, choke or hold them at gunpoint. You have to be careful because the torture mechanic has a meter and if you torture them too hard you’ll kill them. There’s also special items in the environment you can use to torture. Those special item kills forced the devs to make the screen go black and white to avoid an AO rating. Good thing there’s a mod to turn it off.

The story, though cliche is still fun to play through. There’s some very diverse environments from gritty allies to jungle islands. The bosses you get to fight like the Russian, Kingpin & Jigsaw are decent fights. The shooting is fine it’s just taken straight from Max Payne. There’s a bunch of guns and abilities you can buy.

One thing that blew me away is the cameos. There’s multiple cameos for different characters from the Marvel universe. They all feel so cool and not forced and one mission takes place in one of their buildings. You look at them and like “there’s no way thats ______.”

Definitely check this out if you’re a super hero fan. This is by Volition, the Saints Row & Red Faction guys and they had love for the source material. Go play this on emulator, sitting online making posts wishing for a remaster is lame..
