Dying Light 2 Review ish: I Remember Ranting About
I couldn’t bother to finish it. Dying Light 2 is literally the equivalent of if Ubisoft picked up the rights for the series from Techland. When I saw that menu cursor and the enemy health bars, the writing was on the wall. The game is a complete regression of everything that made the first game great. Its crazy now that I think about it, the first DL is one of the best zombie games of all time. The first 8-10 hours of that game were a slog, because it had that issue where they took too much from the player to begin with. However, it got fun and enjoyable.
The story of the first game was a B Movie, predictable, but entertaining.Kyle Crane wasn’t particularly special but again he had some characterization in there, more so in the following. DL2 this Aiden dude is somehow worse he’s boring and talks nothing of substance. All his flashback sequences are just dumb and redundant. Everything is literally ”I need to find my sister”. Crane needed to find Rais but he wasn’t saying every damn sentence. The Characters again are ok but still not as good as the first game. Hokar seemed cool at first but just turned out bland.
The map again is like a Ubisoft game really big but simultaneously has nothing in it. The first game each district felt distinct had its own atmosphere and landmarks. Places felt lived in and had their own little touches for example that night mission to the school. The interiors in DL2 literally all feel generic, lacking those same little touches. The roof tops and houses all look the same, especially in old Villador.
People say the parkour is better in this game, but I went back and played DL1 and yeah no its about the same but there’s more animations they’ve put. The choice system doesn’t change much from what I’ve seen. The melee combat feels more generic if you ask me and why the hell did they remove the guns?
The night doesn’t come close to what it was in the first game.In DL1 you literally snuck around paranoid the entire time, something was going to get you. Hence the phrase Good Night, Good Luck. This games night system is anticlimactic to say the least, those chase sequences just aren’t scary or fun for that matter, just annoying when your trying to climb up a building and something keeps knocking you down til your dead. And this whole prevent yourself from turning nonsense is just plain annoying. Literally you be walking at night and then its 2mins before you turn and then I have to take mushrooms to get another 30sec or run back from
VERDICT: I took the unique yet ok B moviesness from the first game and good gameplay then kinda shit on it for genericness and trends
